Bottesford NHW Alert: Cold Callers in Harby / Computer Scam / Burglary & Theft in Long Bennington

Cold Callers in Harby

It has been reported to Harby NHW that suspicious cold callers were recently in the village. 2 males -  one late twenties or early thirties dressed smart casual. No details of second male. They were observed looking at properties from a driveway.

One of the males called at a property and asked if the householder was interested in a conservatory. When advised they already had a conservatory, the caller asked if the householder would be interested in block paving. The caller did not produce any ID and did not offer any sales literature. It seems unusual for a conservatory company to offer block paving.

Please do not encourage any cold callers, even from charitable organisations. Report any suspicious incidents to the police on 101 giving as much detail as possible.

Please pass this information to friends/neighbours who do not receive email alerts. Thank you.

Computer Scam

The following report was received from a Bottesford resident:

"I have this evening had a telephone call from a foreign person, possibly Indian. This was reputedly a call he was making to all Windows users to warn them of a virus and to tell them how to eradicate it themselves. Of course you had to log in to the computer and he would talk you through it. I put the phone down but did take the number he was calling from which is: 004949055110. Hopefully no-one will get caught out with this but I thought it was worth reporting to you."

Googling this number throws up a number of reports from people who have received unsolicited phone calls, some along the above lines, others about different subjects which have only one thing in common - they all appear to be typical scam subjects. Always be suspicious of unsolicited phone calls or visitors offering services. There is more information about all types of fraud and how to avoid becoming a victim at www. actionfraud.police.uk
