Bottesford NHW Alert: Attempted Burglary at Normanton / More Scams

Attempted Burglary at Normanton

In the early hours of Sunday morning an attempt was made to enter a house in Normanton whilst the occupants were asleep. The attempt failed when the intruder alarm sounded and nothing was stolen. There is currently a spate of such incidents across villages in the Vale so please be extra vigilant and where possible take extra precautions.

More Scams

We continue to receive reports about attempted scams including:
  •  A suspected email phishing scam claiming to be from HMRC advising the recipient that they have an unclaimed tax refund. Be aware that HMRC do not deal with tax refunds via email! If in doubt contact HMRC direct using their advertised telephone number and check it out. Do not rely on the telephone numbers in the email - they may be part of the scam, and do not click on any links in the email.
  • A suspected phishing telephone call claiming to be from Microsoft offering to correct the recipient's computer problems. In this case the recipient is encouraged to download a programme called "TeamViewer"  which once activated allows remote access to their computer. As a general rule do not allow strangers access to your computer, especially anyone that has approached you. If you have problems with your computer consult a recognised specialist. Ideally one working in a controlled and supervised environment.
