PC Phone Calls

We have recently received reports from two local residents that they have received unsolicited phone calls advising them that their computers have virus infections. Needless to say the callers are offering to help resolve this problem for payment over the phone! This is a scam. Although the callers are likely to know your name, address and obviously your telephone number, they nothing about your computer. In one case they advised the resident that his Windows operating system was infected when he actually uses a different system, Linux. In this case a little questioning quickly revealed that the caller had no knowledge of computers and was likely reading from a pre-prepared script aimed solely at extracting financial information!

The advice about cold callers, be they in person or on the phone is simple and self-evident. Treat them with extreme caution and never reveal financial, or any other personal, information to them.

Anyone receiving such calls can report them to the police on the national non-emergency 101 number.
