Bottesford NHW Alert: Burglaries in Lincolnshire Villages/National Daily Mirror Rogue Doorstep Sellers Campaign/Scrapping the Metal Thieves in the East Midlands

Burglaries in Lincolnshire Villages

We are circulating the following alert because it is possible that these thieves may start to target other areas as police activity intensifies.

Lincolnshire police are urging villagers to be vigilant and to report suspicious activity after a series of burglaries in Long Bennington, Claypole, Caythorpe, Dry Doddington, Branston, Washingborough and Bassingham.

These offences tend to take place between 5pm and 11pm at the weekends and usually when the occupants are out. The offender or offenders break in and normally steal cash. This type of offence has been taking place sporadically for a number of months and a dedicated operation has been set up to tackle it.

DI Suzanne Davies said a significant amount of work was being done behind the scenes, but that the public had a vital role to play. “As ever, we need residents to work with us to tackle this issue,” she said. “The early reporting of suspicious activity really helps us in terms of taking swift action to make arrests. "Please do not worry about giving us insignificant information, if you think something is suspicious in your neighbourhood then give us a call.”

Residents are also being asked to consider ways of making their houses look occupied when they are out. Cheap timer switches for lights are available from DIY shops and residents can leave a radio on to generate some sound in the house.

National Daily Mirror Rogue Doorstep Sellers Campaign

The National Neighbourhood and Home Watch Network is supporting the Daily Mirror's campaign to reduce rogue doorstep sellers which will be included in tomorrow’s (Thursday 3 May 2012) Daily Mirror newspaper.  A poster will be included which will include the yellow Neighbourhood Watch roundel and the poster will be available online to download and print off at home at a later date via the Mirror's website.  (www.mirror.co.uk)

It is hoped that this national campaign will help raise the profile of rogue doorstep sellers and strengthen the message that we already deliver locally with the help of our local Trading Standards and police force.

Scrapping the Metal Thieves in the East Midlands

East Midlands Crimestoppers have launched a film to help prevent metal theft, by encouraging members of the public to report suspicious behaviour to the Police, or if they prefer anonymously on 0800 555 111 .
