Bottesford NHW Alert: Suspicious Persons Reported / Police Press Release - Lead Theft

Suspicious Persons Reported

Farmwatch have reported two males in a silver car seen acting suspiciously in the area this morning. Please keep an eye out and if spotted report to the police. Crime in progress call 999, otherwise call 101.

Police Press Release - Lead Theft

The police and NHW are constantly encouraging people to report suspicious activity. The benefit of doing so is clearly illustrated by the following press release from Leicestershire Police:

Cristian Lita 34yrs and Doru Gaurila 31yrs both from the West Midlands area pleaded guilty to theft of lead from St Michael’s Church Roof in Hose and were sentenced to 16months imprisonment at a hearing at Leicester Crown Court on 31/01/13

The theft occurred in the early hours of Tuesday 13th November 2012 when a member of the public called in a suspicious incident after seeing the males loading something into the back of a van. He took down the registration and was able to pass this to police who in turn responded to the call and were able to make arrests following a stop check a few miles away. A further vehicle was then stopped in Birmingham and the lead recovered and a further arrest was made. The lead had been treated with Smartwater allowing the authorities to identify it was the lead from the church roof.

Inspector Gray the local policing commander at Melton said

‘This was a superb piece of police work only made possible by the quick thinking by a member of the community. Melton operates a Church Watch scheme which encourages people to keep an eye on their local church and to phone anything suspicious in to the police. This sentence sends a strong message to would be criminals travelling to Melton intent on committing crime. ‘

Operation Ball which tackles rural crime is continuing with additional staff patrolling the rural villages. They are also working alongside their colleagues from Nottingham and Grantham.
